Re denouements, conclusions, epilogues and things, I have found myself reluctant to pen this blog.

Posting to this website has become such an ingrained habit that I don’t know how to stop. More importantly, I can’t find words which encapsulate adequately the joys and discomforts of Tainui’s journey; the welcome respite she has secured in countless remote bays and anchorages (Ho Ho Bay, Seno Pia Este, Heel of Grandma’s Boot, Isabela and so many others); the calms and storms she has endured on my behalf, and the splendid crew who have accompanied me.

Finally, I am loath to close the door on further adventures in Tainui just yet. Off Moreton Island I was looking forward to hanging up my life jacket once and for all and buying a farm. Now however (well, after AQIS has finished with us), Middleton Reef and Lord Howe Island beckon. Both of them are good excuses to keep this website open a while longer, especially if Maxine comes good with her threat to join Tainui again.

    Hello John, i just tripped over your blog and immediately recognized your dry humour and erudite comments as being the John I remember from over thirty years ago. I still have the American Practical Navigator tome that you gave me for some minor thing I did for you, inscribed with your’s and Meredith’s signature! I have fond memories of the times spent with you and Meredith and John and Anna in the Pacific. I admire your voyaging tenacity, what an amazing time you have had on Tainui and Awatea. For me, well three grown up children a nursing career and some many great times cruising around New Zealand and the Pacific later, I still love sailing, now in a sweet wooden 30 footer that sails like a dream with no vices and always wants to please (unlike her owner). I hope you continue your life odyssey, it is hard to leave the sea I find too, our blood is truly saline.

      Renfred! Splendid to hear from you, mate. What a blast from the past this is. Your name comes up from time to time on board – especially when there’s something electronic gone wrong. Are you still hamming? I thought I heard you on air when we were down in the Auckland Islands, but I wasn’t certain.

      What times they were, eh? The Pacific Islands aren’t the same anymore, I’m sorry to say. Re old cruising friends, I am in touch with quite a few of them. John and Anna (Kestrel) have sailed in Tainui in the Caribbean and the Galapagos; Martin (Illusion) joined me in Patagonia; Tony Curtis (Eos) is driving a whale boat in Sydney and we see one another regularly; Laurie Gubb (Kurura) is ashore now in Mooloolaba – he used to own Tainui by the way; while Dave Lucas (Liberty) crewed with me in Tainui for some 25,000 miles until his sad death a couple of years ago.

      I’m glad you, like them, are still afloat, Renfred. I will be, always, too.

    Hello John.Have been following you’re adventures for years.What an epic trip.I am still the proud owner of Obsession 11,had her painted and the old ford rebuilt in Malaysia last year.runs like a brand newly.We are still in Asia but heading to the Pacific next year.Happy new adventures to you.Regards Grant

      Good to touch base again, Grant. I remember Obsession, her aged Lehman and soft after decks from 20 years ago. I would love to see what you have done with her. I hope we can catch up when you get into the Pacific.

      We seem to have located the source of our mammoth oil consumption – buggered valve guides and seals. Our mechanic reckons our problems should be over when the head has been worked over. Sure beats $17,000 plus labour for a new engine, eh?

    John, have been following your milkrun across the pacific and your landfall into Brisbane. Seems the weather gods saved up a good welcome home punch in the nose for Tainui. Are you due back in Sydney anytime soon? Would be good to catch up for a debrief.
